Exfoliation is the process of eliminating dead skin cells to reveal a smooth, refreshed complexion and can be performed with different methods. Chemical peels can be a very effective and efficient way of exfoliating the skin.
Chemical peels vary in depth and strength. They can be very superficial, sometimes refered to as “lunch time” peels with little- to -no flaking, to a more robust peel with 3-5 days of peeling. Peel formulas contain ingredients such as glycolic acid, which produce a slight sloughing, salicylic acid that is used to clean out pores and kill bacteria, and stronger formulas of TCA or trichloroacetic acid, which will peel for several days removing the outer layer of dead skin cells. Peels are recommended in the various strengths for varying skin conditions including acne, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation and sun damage.
Abrams Dermatology offers several peels that will meet the needs of most patient’s skin conditions. The VI peel is a skin transformation treatment – our strongest peel yet very gentle. It is often referred to as the “painless peel”. This peel helps to correct acne (killing p.acnes), post inflammatory hyperpigmentation for acne, and sun damage in the form of brown spots, fines lines, enlarged pores and rough texture. It is safe to use on all skin types and skin colors. The VI peel is an in office treatment that takes about 30 minutes. After the peel is applied, after care instructions are given along with the products that you will use post peel. The peeling typically begins after day three and can last for three to five days. Depending on skin type, peeling can be a nice flake to “sheets” of skin shedding. This peel can eliminate years of sun damage or old acne discoloration. It is important to know that the home care products that you use will make a big difference in lasting results from chemical peels. Proper sun protection is a must.
VI Aesthetics has an interesting back story as to the creation of the VI peel. Dr Khahil, a Lebanese born ER Doctor, created the peel to give his own daughter back her confidence after suffering with acne. His daughter Mary, now CEO of VI Aesthetics, is of Cuban and Lebanese decent and therefore was having a difficult time with products that would respond to her darker skin color. The peel was successful in addressing the causes of her acne and the after effects of acne such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation – or the discoloration that comes from the breakouts. Having the formulation consist of multiple acids at a lower concentration allows the peel to penetrate deeper and without the bad side effects of deeper “traditional” peels.
Complimentary consultations are always available with Catherine Deans, Licensed Medical Esthetician, to discuss your individual skin care needs. Correcting and protecting your skin can be simply achieved. The VI Peel is one of many medical treatments offered at Abrams Dermatology and could be the perfect peel for your skin.
