Does touching toads gives you warts?

Grandma used to tell me that kissing or touching a toad caused warts!

Grandma used to tell me that kissing or touching a toad caused warts!  So for most my life I steered clear of all amphibians for fear of getting a wart.  Truth be known, toads do not cause warts.

Warts are benign growths attributed to the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are 100 strains of HPV virus several of which cause genital warts. Those that cause plantar, common warts and flat warts are strains 1,2,4,24,26,27,29,41,57,3,10,27,27,41,49 respectively. These strains are not from being sexually active!

Most warts will resolve on their own in 24 months and often reappear. Most warts will not cause problems; some can bleed if picked or nicked, some can cause pain due to location. All can be spread.

Rule of thumb regarding warts:

Wash hands after touching your wart.  Do not go barefoot in public areas where others maybe barefoot. Leave your socks or shoes on when weighing yourself at your doctor office, gym or supermarket.

See your dermatologist if warts become painful, bleed or fail over the counter topical therapy.
