BEAUTY AND THE BEACH: How to get your skin ready for Summer

Posted on 29. Jun, 2012 by in Skin Cancer, Skin Care, Skin Conditions, Sunburn, Sunscreen

Apply a moisturizer /sunscreen daily that contains at least an SPF of 30.

Summer -time is officially here.  The days are longer and the temperature is soaring…Thinking about summer and the beach  brings  to mind visions of deep, dark bronzed skin.  But did you know that a suntan is our skin’s way of actually protecting itself from sun damage?!  That bronze color is an over-production of melanin.  Melanin protects us from the harmful, ultraviolet rays from the sun.  These uv rays cause skin damage that shows up as hyperpigmentation (brown spots), age spots, and wrinkles as well as skin cancer!

Sun damage  accumulates  over the course of the years without  proper skin care.

Proper, regular maintenance is easy and will result in beautiful, radiant skin that will last a lifetime.

Some basic steps that should be included in your skincare routine are:

  •   Gently cleansing the skin morning and night.  After cleansing apply an antioxidant serum .  Antioxidants fight the free radical damage caused by our environment.  They have been clinically proven to protect the skin as well as promote healing and cellular turnover.
  • Apply a moisturizer /sunscreen  daily that  contains at least an spf of 30. There are many good sunscreens on the market that will block both the UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.  Make sure it states it is a broad spectrum sunscreen.   Zinc and Titanium Dioxide are both.
  • Exfoliation is essential in ridding your skin of the dead cells that build up.  Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are  both good ways that can be professionally performed on a regular 6-8 week basis .   Chemical exfoliation in the form of fruit acids, salicylic acids and lactic acids can be done with a minimum amount of down time.     Incorporating the use of Vitamin A is one of the very best things you can do at home that will help  keep the skin cell turnover optimal , smooth out the texture of the skin and keep breakouts to a minimum.

Now is the perfect time to get your skin in shape for the summer sun.  A deep pore,  cleansing and hydrating facial is a great way to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.
