What is acne and why do we get it? Acne or Acne Vulgaris is an inflammation of our sebaceous glands caused by several factors including hormones, stress, and family history. Bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes can also play a role in acne production. There have not been any proven studies linking food and acne, but eating a healthy diet can help improve the overall health of your skin, and is always suggested.
We classify acne based on the type of lesions. Mild acne consists of white and black heads with occasional red bumps. Moderate acne has a combination of white and black heads with larger inflamed bumps. Severe acne is the worst with severe oozing bumps and possible scarring. Acne can occur anywhere on the body with the most common being the face, back and chest.
Since there are different types of acne there are different ways to treat it including washes, topical creams, ointments, oral antibiotics, light treatments, and lasers as well as Accutane which is reserved for severe acne due to the many possible side affects. Some women may benefit form oral birth control to help control their acne.
Acne can be difficult to treat so you must be patient and persistent with your treatment. Acne can get worse before it gets better when first starting out with a treatment. There is no cure for acne, and pimples can reoccur, but with proper treatment it can be controlled. There are always new medications that come out on the market, so if you suffer from acne make sure you ask about any new treatments. Sometimes your skin will respond better to new or different treatments, so it is important to let your doctor know what you have tried so that they can prescribe the proper plan that will work for you.
Many people are concerned about acne scarring. There are a variety of treatments for this as well. There are newer lasers that will improve the look but will not completely remove them. Consult with your doctor for answers on your acne because each individual is different.
